Welcome to my web site. My name is Alan Rowlands and I’m a photographer.
“No you’re not, what you do is art, you’re an artist.”
       Okay, I’m an artist
“No you’re not, what you do is photography, you’re a photographer.”
Oh dear, here we go again.
       I make pretty pictures, I’m
Alan Rowlands, Pretty Picture Maker, you either dig it or you don’t, lets hope you do.
The pictures you’ll see here represent a small selection of a larger collection, which is growing all the time. If you just want to look at pictures, eyes left and go for it, if you want to know more about me or buy some pictures, then read on.

If you want to buy some pictures I’ll be renting a stall at Camden Lock, part of Camden Market, as soon as I’ve decided which ones to leave out.
Presentation. The prints are 6x9 inches, mounted on sheets of white card, A4, and then sealed in an A4 laminating pouch for protection. There is no need to drill holes in the wall in order to hang one of my prints, blu tak is all you need, the corners don’t tear, if you drop one it doesn’t break, they’re easy to wipe clean, light weight and don’t take up much space, so you can have lots of pictures hanging on the wall, as I have, and moving house doesn’t present a problem either, just pull them off, put them in a box and put them back up at your new place, how simple is that, a bit to simple for some.
Most photographers produce editions of 100 or more. I produce editions of 100 for all the Gigs pictures as they’re easy to produce, and 1,000 for the Abstract and Other stuff as they’re not so easy to produce. Most photographers produce big prints that sell for big prices + VAT, I produce small prints and I sell them for £5 each with no VAT. (I’d need to sell over 10,000 prints a year before the need to add VAT, something I’d like to do but don’t expect to just yet.) I believe I’m good at what I do and as I have a high output I don’t want to spend the next five years selling the same picture, therefore, low price high turnover, well that’s the theory.
Vincent van Gogh wanted to introduce art to the people, but the people and the art world looked down on him and said,
“You’re mad and your pictures are crap,” so he gave up and shot himself, what else could he do. As soon as he was dead he became ‘a genius’ and the race was on to buy up his work. I like to learn from other peoples mistakes aswell as my own, don’t let the bastards get you down and don’t ever give up, if only he’d hung on for a few more years.
Adam Smith, in his book ‘The Wealth of Nations’, advised people to invest in antiques, property and art. There are many programmes on TV encouraging people to invest in antiques and property, but when it comes to programmes on art all you get is a bunch of high brow intellectuals talking a load of arty farty mega-woffle. As in Vincent’s day the art world is still controlled by a bunch of tiny minded elitist snobs who look down from above whilst doing nothing creative themselves.
An art gallery is a shares shop, a gallery owner is a stock broker, an art critic is a financial advisor, an exhibition is a shares issue, the artist is an entrepreneur and Andy Warhol called his studio ‘The Factory’.
There are many photographers galleries with web sites, so check some out and decide for yourself whether or not I’m good enough to get a distribution deal and publish a book of photographs, I’m raising capital for it now. (self-publishing gives me complete control over the contents)
That’s all for now, I hope you enjoy the pictures and maybe see you sometime,
                                 Alan.

PS. Anyone with a fat cheque book could monopolise my work, in order to prevent this, I accept cash only and 2 prints per edition max. is all I allow; that’s one to hang on the wall and one to sell at a later date for a profit.

PPS. I own the means of production and the profits of my labour go into my pocket, and as for artists not being interested in making money, that’s bullshit, besides, I’m a pretty picture maker so it doesn’t apply to me.
